One element each
A fin, an antenna, or a horn — never two, and never none. It is the only thing that leaves the silhouette, so it does the work a whole kit of armour was doing before, at a fraction of the noise.

What they are painted
Two tones per skin: the body colour and a near-black ink for the eyes. Every body sits in a narrow band of lightness and saturation, which is what lets a roster read as one family. The crew have theirs assigned; everyone else draws from the fallback set.
